North West Zambia Development Trust
  • The North West Zambia Development Trust (NWZDT) is a charity set up by a group of people connected with the area, both locally and in the UK.
  • The Trust works directly with the local population and has a connection to the historic Kalene mission hospital which celebrated 100 years of service in 2006.
  • NWZDT believes that while many individual crises can be eased by food and medicine, real progress comes from investment in infrastructure that most in the West take for granted - clean water, electricity, sanitation, and employment.
  • A source of sustainable electric power was judged the priority as a trigger to the others, and the Zambezi Rapids Hydro-Electric Scheme has just been completed.

  • This is a 700KW run-of-river hydro-electric scheme which has taken three years to build and has recently been completed - July 2007.
  • Almost no machinery was utilised to increase local employment - 99% of workforce has been local, unskilled labour.
  • The project's success is down to the determination of the core team and a remarkable mobilization of freely-given expertise and goodwill from around the globe.
  • The power company that will operate the scheme is named after the local chief, His Royal Highness Chief Zengamina Nyakaseya.
We urgently need to raise final funding to complete the grid and buy the remaining hardware, such as transformers.
Please contact our chairman, Peter Gill, if you can help.
